About the book: The war has stolen Rosalie’s fiancé, Vic, from her forever. But rather than wallow, Rosalie distracts herself by cramming her days full of activity—mainly by shooting rivets into the B-17 bombers that will destroy the enemy.
When a reporter dubs her “Seattle's Own Rosie the Riveter,” even more responsibility piles up. Her strong arms bear all this, but when intense feelings surface for Kenny, the handsome, kind-hearted, and spiritually unwavering reporter, the fear of losing another love propels Rosalie to leave.
It’s only when Rosalie realizes that God has brought her to this place—and this person—for a reason, the sparkling grace of God compels her to let go of her own strength and lean on His, as well as open her heart to love.

Jennifer at The Toy Box Years While I usually find books that are co-authored do not flow well, you can hardly tell that two authors wrote this book. The chapters flow together easily and are consistent. The authors did their research and weaved what they learned into a quality story. While this book is both a love story and a history lesson, it's also a story of faith and hope and learning to trust again. I throughly enjoyed every moment of reading this book and highly recommend it to others!
8/17 Nise' at Under the Boardwalk Tricia and Ocieanna did a fantastic job taking us to the Seattle area in 1943. You can hear the rivets and smell the ocean, the authors attention to detail and research definitely shines thorough. I loved the variety of characters and the appearance of the celebrities of the time period.
8/18 Maggie at Tethered Mommy It’s refreshing to read a story that ends up with everybody happy.
Sharon at Sharon's Garden of Book Review I absolutely fell in love with the World War II era story featured in "Love Finds You In Victory Heights, Washington. Focusing on the women who were left behind to carry on the work during wartime while the men were away fighting to keep our country free, this romantic tale is a tribute to these ladies and the adversities they overcame. The authors, Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss, obviously did their research on this subject and period in time, and I was delighted to find that they captured the essence of the era perfectly.
My father fought in World War II and although he didn't talk much about what he saw while in the Fourteenth Air Force Group, the American Volunteer Group and the Flying Tigers who fought in China, India and Burma, he did share his love of the music of the time. Glenn Miller, the Andrew Sisters, Bing Crosby and others were a part of my childhood, and seeing that they are incorporated into this fantastic novel was a real treat.
Renee at Black 'n Gold Girl's Book Spot Not only is the cover beautiful but the story is as well. I especially loved that the dialogue between characters was authentic to the 1940s. You don't hear "doll" and "sweets" used much these days! Tricia and Ocieanna did a good job with this one. It will be interesting to see what they come up with next!
Margaret at Creative Madness Mama The characters flow off the pages and make this an enjoyable end of summer read or for anytime. The language of the time and place are fascinating and this book is a great one to fall into the pages of as a journey for a little escape.
8/19 Christa at Fairfield Corner Academy Loved this book! There have been several Love Finds You books that I have read, and this one is one of my favorites - hands down!!
Karla at Ramblin' Roads Not only is it a fun love story, I also enjoyed the historical setting and events woven throughout. It was very well-researched, which always makes a book more enjoyable in my opinion.
Stacey AT WORD Up! “Love Finds You In Victory Heights, Washington” by Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss is a touching story of wartime loss and love that paints a picture of real life history. This beautifully written tribute to the patriotic men and women of World War II is an enlightening journey for the historical romance reader. I am especially impressed because this novel was written by two authors. How do they do that and make the prose and dialogue flow so well? This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that I highly recommend for a weekend of entertaining reading.
8/20 Mindy at A Room Without Books Is Empty I have never read anything by either of these authors but will be looking out for other books by them. I loved reading about a woman who stepped up during a trying time in our country's history to do what needed to be done. I don't think enough has been said about these women during that time in history. Of the course the added romance was a bonus. A Great book that teaches us to rely on God.
Molly at Book Reviews by Buuklvr81 They are absolutely the perfect combination for co-authors. These talented women write as one and know what will capture their readers' hearts! This dynamic duo knew how to hook readers with their fantastic Love Finds You in Lonesome Prairie, Montana, and they've done it again with Victory Heights, Washington. These talented ladies have taken amazingly crafted characters, an incredible era in time, fabulously thorough research, a lesson in letting go and moving on, and created a romantic, heart capturing story full of God that readers can both laugh and cry through. The use of the "Rosie the Riveter" was stunning and makes the story that much more engaging! I fell in love with everything about this novel! This is worthy of 5 star praises and so much more! It's an excellent addition to both a home library and the Love Finds You collection. It's also one of those books that would make a stunning Hallmark movie! I recommend this novel to everyone, especially if you've never read a Love Finds You book. You won't be sorry that you did and I'm sure, like me, you'll be anxiously awaiting another novel penned by these fantastic ladies!
Beckie at RBC Library The latest in the Love Finds You series is a sweet romance. I also found the authors really did their homework. From the slang of the day to the information about the camouflage of the Boeing plant, the novel brings back a day when men fought for what was right and women sacrificed to support them. This story shows a glimpse of an era when patriotism was popular and people did what ever it took to keep America safe. Take a trip to Victory Heights, it will be well worth your time.
8/21 Christine at The IE Mommy Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss create likeable and loveable characters in their latest “Love Finds You” novel. Love Finds You in Victory Heights will warm your heart, delight your soul and interest your mind. A triple threat in print.
Michelle at New Horizon Reviews I was on the edge of my seat from cover to cover. The authors, Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss, use vivid language to bring this story to life. At times I wanted to cry, other times I had to smile as I was reminded of God and His faithfulness. I give this novel five stars for the thorough research that has been done to bring this story together. I recommend it to anyone who likes romance novels set in that time period.
Katy at A Few More Pages This was a lovely romance in a great setting that really kept me turning the pages.
Crystal At My Reading Room It's a beautiful love story set in a time when national pride was at an all-time high. However the author pair does not gloss over the whole situation, they show that there were people that weren't so great as well. The shining examples are the main characters who learn through the book about God's will in their lives, both personal and professional.
8/23 Jody at The Corner Book Blog I really loved this book. It's a light read but there's a lot of historical information that is very interesting. The authors descriptions made me feel like I was there as Kenny and Rosalie were dancing, feeling the emotions of the war rallies and helping as Rosalie volunteered her time with the soldiers. I highly recommend this book.
Stacie at Hobbit Door It was a very cute book. I really enjoyed that it took place in our new backyard. It gave me some great ideas about places to visit. I enjoyed reading the book and actually knowing some of the places they were describing. I love reading about the time period it was placed in--WWII. It was a unique picture of what was going on in our country at that time.
Elizabeth at Elizabeth at Count It All Joy Love Finds You in Victory Heights, WA was a fun read that was obviously well researched. I thoroughly enjoyed the slang terms from the era, including hearing Rosalie referred to as “Doll.” And when one of her friends says “Look at you, sweets. You’re over the moon.” I couldn’t keep the grin from my face. The dances, the music, the willingness of the girls in the story to do their part to welcome the “boys” home from war. It really is great to see how a community can all come together.
8/24 Laura at Lighthouse Academy I loved reading LOVE FINDS YOU IN VICTORY HEIGHTS, WASHINGTON. I also enjoyed reading the blurb at the front of the book telling about this real life suburb of Seattle.
Janet Ruth at Along the Way This story was written with historical accuracy, a little romance, and lovable characters that I could easily relate to. An awesome combination that I really enjoyed!
8/25 Christy at Southern Sassy Things War stories aren't for everyone, and even though they fire up a great sense of patriotism in me, I find that I have to take them in small doses. This story was perfect for me in that, there wasn't a lot of "war" in it. Rather, I knew it was something that everyone was aware of, and all the characters were just trying to make it through another day the best they knew how. I took with me more than just the romance from this story; I took away pride for my country, and the sacrifices that so many soldiers offered.
Jettie at jettiesramblings.com A very well written book, and it is seamless, you cannot tell a difference in the writing styles of the 2 authors.
Carly at Carlybird's Home I love historical novels set during World War II and I love the writing team of Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss. And of course, you can’t go wrong with a Love Finds You story. All these factors come together to make for a story that took me back to a time and place when the world was in turmoil, but life in America was simpler and patriotism was strong. Rosalie was a strong and loyal woman dealing with the death of her fiancé on the battlefield and Kenny was a man seeking his purpose, a man with secrets of his own. Both of these characters were easy to like and their chemistry felt natural. The authors did a fantastic job with that. The romance never felt forced or fake. This book also had a lot of humor and light moments that you would expect in everyday life. I really enjoyed the balance of romance, humor, and historical accuracy. This book had a charm about it that stayed with me even after I finished reading it. I really enjoyed everything about this book and I highly recommend it to romance fans and historical fans. This writing team knows how to write a story that will appeal to a variety of readers.
Leticia at My Daily Trek This book is a great tribute to each and every person who contributed their time and effort to help the United States win the war. Tricia and Ocienna did a superb job and I hope many of my readers will take the time and read this book.
Mel @ Real Heart Prints I really enjoyed this book, especially because of the setting and the time period in history. Tricia and Ocieanna have written a very captivating story that is filled with tidbits of history, as well, just from their research and interviews with some of the women whose lives inspire this story. They also have made the story very real, entertaining, and sometimes very humorous. I highly recommend it.
Cindy at Cindy's Reviews I loved "Rosie the Riveter" and truly enjoyed this book. It was a easy read, and I truly did enjoy learning more about the young ladies who kept our nation going while our boys were off to war. Thanks for a great book!!
8/27 Heather at Mommy Of 1 and Counting The book is seamless and you can not tell that 2 authors wrote it. It's all meshed so well together. The romance never felt fake or forced. I believe it was REAL. It felt real to me, like it really could've happened. This book had a lot of humor in it as well. This is a book that I could see really happening and from beginning to end I was intrigued the entire time. It is a truly good read and you need to pick yourself up a copy!
Jennifer at Irish Splendour Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss brilliantly make the story come to life with incredible details and accuracy of the early 1940's surrounding the War. Lingo of the day is pleasantly utilized from "bee's knees", " hotsy totsy" to "sassafras" and "fiddlesticks". The clothing and "jitterbuggin'" are the icing on the cake. You find the main characters "cut a rug" at The Jolly Roger or "lollygagging" around at The Igloo. The dazzling appearances of Lana Turner, Bob Hope, and my favorite, Ginger Rogers are the cherry on top of this vintage romance. I am deeply gratified that the romance keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very start to the absolute finish. Goyer and Fleiss include such "riveting" scenarios to keep you wondering until the lovely book's final page. Much sleep lost and many obligations ignored, I could not put this book down nor wait to pick up where I left off to find out the next enticing scene between Rosalie and Kenny. Love Finds You in Victory Heights, Washington is one of those tales you wish would never end, with the finely molded characters lingering in your subconscience for a considerable amount of time to come.
Lauri at Knits Reads and Reviews Tricia Goyer nad Ocieanna Fleiss captivated me in their newest book. 'Rosie the riveter' is one girl who charms many, and she charmed me as well. This book brings you into the lives of the women left behind, but all is not sad and forlorn, and with Rosalie as the main character you can't help but laugh at her antics. Heartbreak, hope and love are what this story is about and you won't be disappointed as you travel to Seattle in the year 1942 and shoot rivets with Rosie!
Lori at Love, Honor & Stick Together It's refreshing and sweet to read about innocent love stories from this era that are free from the sometimes vulgar and value-less "love" stories so prevalent in today's culture. I enjoyed Rosalie's growth throughout the book. She overcame guilt, avoidance, selfishness and fear. The story of faith, hope and learning to trust again kept me eager to read more.
8/28 Pamela at Daysong Reflections Love Finds You In Victory Heights, Washington is a fabulous story with so much detail about the Seattle, Washington area, an inside look at the airplane plant, and the lives of the women who kept things going. Club scenes, dance and clothing descriptions, period slang, talk of rationing, and many other details made the story come alive. Love Finds You In Victory Heights, Washington is one of the absolute best novels I have read about the WWII years. This is one book that is definitely worth picking up. I highly recommend it.
Andi @ Radiant Light It was very enjoyable and kept me hooked from page one til the last sentence. I couldn't tell who was writing and that was also a great thing as with co-authored books sometimes they can be stiff, and this wasn't. I highly recommend this one!
Marissa @ The Review Stew I love books based during WWII and this book hit just the right spot for me! It had a great mix of romance, history, feminism, and friendship! I love the main character Rosalie and learning about her struggles, accomplishments, relationships, and love! What a great time period for women and showing how strong and capable we are! This book also had a wonderful Christian atmosphere and really showed how important trusting it is to trust God! I loved that! I recommend Love Finds You in Victory for all historical fiction lovers and romance lovers! This was a great book!
JHS @ Colloquium Against the backdrop of actual events, Goyer and Fleiss have created a cast of fictional characters that are covincingly authentic. Painstakingly researched and accurate to the last detail, Love Finds You in Victory Heights, Washington draws the reader back through teh decades to a time when Americans were united in a common goal and everyone was called upon to do his/her part to bring victory. Goyer and Fleiss expertly examine the emotional struggles their characters are facing by revealing their inner dialogue, as well as their silent prayers. The story is mesmerizing because the characters are intriguing and relatable, whether or not the reader shares their religious outlook.
Christy at Christy's Book Blog The authors do an amazing job of bringing WWII Seattle to life with lots of slang, as well as the problems the characters face in day-to-day life. From prejudice on the job, to worry over every newspaper article to the nightclubs where everyone dances as if there's no tomorrow, the reader is pulled into this world and just may never want to leave.
8/30 Chrissy @ Chrissy's World Of Books http://chrissysworldofbooks.blogspot.com/
Carol at Book Before Bed I really enjoyed reading this story. Historical romances are always fun to read and sometimes we can learn something new.
Kat at Heart 2 Heart I must say I loved it. A perfect 5 out of 5 stars for keeping the reader engaged in the story of both Rosalie and the reporter Kenny as well as all the local supporting characters.
Kay@My Random Acts of Reading It's been a long time since I read a historical novel that included a romance. It's also been a while since I read what I would consider inspirational fiction. I hesitate to use a "label", but that describes Love Finds You in Victory Heights, Washington. I truly enjoyed my time in 1940's Seattle. This is a sparkling book written by Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss. It kept me interested. It made me feel good. It lifted my spirits. In short, I loved it.
Susan at His Morning Glory http://hismorningglory.blogspot.com
8/31 Amber Stockton AT A Fiction-Filled Life http://amberstockton.blogspot.com
Amber AT Seasons of Humility I loved how this book transported me back to the World War II era! There were various historical details, from the setting to the characters’ dress and speech, which added to my enjoyment of the book.
Tammy at Tammy's Book Parlor This is a delightful read with comedy & romance (not sappy) and about the lives of the women in the factories plus how they had to ration everything. This was a sad time in our history but together Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss write a beautiful, flowing 5 star story. A story that brings out the best in us and makes us proud to be Americans and women!
Edna at My Favorite Things A great read for historical lovers and for people that was born during this time.
Missie at Thirsty http://fillmythirst.blogspot.com
Rebecca at Fearfully and Wonderfully Made As a historian and avid book reader, I found myself lost in the wonderful world of American life at home during World War II. I love it when authors use real facts about certain time periods in order to give readers a glimpse into "the life and times" of an era while at the same time providing an excellent read. And let me tell you--Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss hit the mark on both counts with Love Finds You in Victory Heights, Washington! It's simply amazing how Goyer and Fleiss put this book together. It's a must read!
9/1 Jennifer at Adventures in Unsell land I had a hard time putting this book down. It kept me up way too late on several evenings, leaving me constantly on the edge of my seat. I love the era in which this story is set. An enthralling World War 11 romance, Love Finds You in Victory Heights made my heart smile big.
Anna AT Mingle Over Mocha http://www.MingleOverMocha.com
Michelle at Life in Review I very highly recommend this book to anyone. It is an all around outstanding read! The writing is beautiful, the story line is incredible, and you will love all the characters! Thank you Tricia and Ocieanna for a spectacular experience! I feel as if I traveled back in time and space and I loved every minute of it!
Amydeanne @ The 160 Acrewoods http://www.the160acrewoods.com
9/2 Mrs. White @ The Legacy of Home Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss have written a fascinating historical novel with a wholesome Christian-based love story.

Blog Tour Schedule:
8/14 Julie at The Surrendered Scribe There is so much included in this book. There are also gorgeous color pictures, too. I brought this book as something to do as my son got his braces off and between the wait for him to be called and the actual appointment, I was there awhile. Amish Proverbs was soothing and relaxing and just plain chocked full of good sense this world could use.
Debra at Footprints in the Butter What a delightful book! Each of the eleven chapters opens with a short 'story' of about four pages, illustrating the concept of that chapter. Concepts such as time, money, work ethic, etc. That is followed by about a dozen pages, with beautiful photographs and wonderful little sayings. All of it makes you think. Some make you smile. Some were familiar to me, but many were not.
Abi at 4 the LOVE of BOOKS This book has been a nice pick up and read here and there book. Good, interesting, inspiring words. Love the lay out with a Amish-style picture on almost every double page spread. A very lovely book. It is a nice little gift book for those that you wouldn't know what to get them or those that have everything. Put is in a gift basket with some other goodies, the receiver will love it.
8/16 Monique at Arms of a Sister I hadn’t heard of many of these sayings, so this was fun to read. It was interesting to read both the sayings, or proverbs, and the meanings behind them. I’ve always been fascinated by the Amish way of life, so being able to get a more detailed picture of what these things mean, some lessons that other people have learned from their dealings with the Amish, and just being taught something new, has me picking up this book time and time again. This isn’t the type of book you have to read from cover to cover. You can literally pick up the book, open it to a random page, and begin reading. It’s a book I’ve had on my nightstand for several weeks now.
Christa at Fairfield Corner Academy This was a super sweet book! I really enjoyed reading thru this and really thinking about what it was saying! I have always been fascinated with the Amish lifestyle, and this book will now be one of my favorites!
Kim at Just a Thought I truly enjoyed this book. It is broken into eleven chapters, each covering a different topic ranging from time to faith and even some just for fun items. Each of these chapters starts with a short story about the chapter topic. I found each of these stories to be thought provoking and enjoyable. Following the story are several pages of wonderful sayings and proverbs along with some gorgeous photographs depicting the Amish way of life. While some of the proverbs were familiar to me, many I had never heard, however all made me think about things in simpler way.
8/17 Mindy at Ponderings of the Heart This book is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. Each chapter shares a few pages about the Amish people and their beliefs. Then it goes on to share exquisite pictures and the proverbs of these simple people.
Theresa at Just One More Paragraph This is such a beautiful book and would make not only a lovely treat for oneself, but is perfect for gift giving. "Amish Proverbs" is filled with gorgeous photograph of Amish life, all respectfully done. This book has made my favorites list - not only for its beauty, but for its inspirational content. I leave this book on the coffee table so that it is available to browse at any time. It has also become a topic of conversation with others when they stop by. I don't think there has been anyone that has been able to resist not only looking at the photos, but reading some of the proverbs and loving it. Personally, I will be ordering more copies to give away to friends and family. The best part - this beautiful hardbound book runs less than $14, making it quite easy on the budget.
8/18 Jody at The Corner Book Blog Amish Proverbs by Suzanne Woods Fisher is a beautiful little gift book. Chock full of colorful photos, quaint sayings and interesting stories about the Amish lifestyle.
Tammy at Tammy's Book Parlor Sweet words and beautiful pictures makes for a simply gorgeous book! This has to be one of the nicest and "richest" books I've had the privilege to read. Amish Proverbs Words of Wisdom from the Simple Life by Suzanne Woods Fisher is beautiful book that takes the simple sayings in life and makes them stand out in our everyday lives. This is a book you'll cherish and pass on to your children's children.
Julie at Busy Julie You all know I am a fan of Suzanne Woods Fisher from my review of her book The Choice. Amish Proverbs really impressed me as well. What a sweet book full of proverbs that will really make you stop and think! Many teens are going off to college this fall, and I think this would be a great book to tuck in their luggage. Nothing like food for thought! Or, it might be a nice birthday gift for a sister or friend!
8/20 Janet at Along the Way This little book is a treasure that I will definitely read again. I especially enjoyed the Just for Fun section. We might think that the Amish are too serious about life to have a sense of humour, but this little book proves otherwise.
Barry at Gnostalgia A delightful book of Amish proverbs with beautiful illustrations. A “must have” for a gift, or coffee table book. Beautiful book, while it is small, it is an enchanting, spiritual read. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Kim at Window To My World I don’t believe in marking in books, so I mark the pages and passages I like with pieces of paper – preferably a brightly colored piece of paper. Amish Proverbs by Suzanne Woods Fisher is a book that closely resembles a porcupine it has so many pieces of paper sticking out of it!! Never has such a little book contained so much to enjoy, so many truths to think about, and so many positive things to put into practice! The reader learns a lot in a succinct and entertaining way about the truths of Amish life and how those truths can positively impact any Christian’s life. This is a treasure of a book, and one that you will want to own and share!
8/21 Julie at One Rainy Afternoon This is a wonderful collection of Amish Proverbs. What I liked best about it was the story at the beginning of each section - something to help you apply to real life what you're reading about. It was great to have another window into the simple lives of the Amish. Suzanne is an excellent author. If you haven't already, be sure to read my review of her 1st book in the Lancaster County Secrets Series, The Choice.
Gretta at The Johns Family Suzanne does a great job of combining Amish Proverbs with photos that showcase the daily life of the Plain People.
8/23 Lori at Lori's Book Reviews Sitting down reading through Amish Proverbs was like sitting with my grandmother in her kitchen. The stories and proverbs warmed my heart and touched my soul. This is a beautifully written and illustrated book and would make a wonderful gift for any woman.
Annette at A Well-Watered Garden I have found that small books like small packages can contain a precious jewel. This book should not be placed on a coffee table to look pretty; but it should be read, savored, enjoyed. Often while reading this book I laughed out loud. I noticed while reading it that I felt my body relaxing, it is a book of gentleness and peace. Intermixed through the book are stories in addition to the proverbs. These stories are of people that have learned through an experience about what matters most in life. Suzanne Woods Fisher has written such a wonderful book! This book would make a great gift.
Dana at A Nibnabit Life This little book is full of some of my favorite things! The words of wisdom, or quotes, are thought provoking, funny, and meaningful. The pictures throughout this book are, fittingly, very simple but very beautiful. I loved that each chapter begins with a story that provides a glimpse into the life of the Amish people.
8/24 Tami at This Mom's Delight It is a beautiful book, both the illustrations and the written content. My favorite proverb in the CHILDREN & FAMILY chapter is “A wife will make or break a household.” It’s a proverb that rings true. This is a good book to read slowly, maybe a page or two a day. Take time to think about the sayings and how they can be applied. These man-made proverbs have good substance.
Heather at Faith, Family and Fun My teen and my tween daughter really liked this book as did I. It contained such wise old sayings. This book is truly a gem! I highly recommend it for anyone! The book has 11 chapters in it, and in each of these chapters there is a short story about the chapter topic. All of this little book was enjoyable
8/25 Mrs. Q at Book Addict I loved this little book, and I will definitely be opening it up from time to time. As a Catholic, I place my trust in God. I try to lead by example and be the best that I can be. There are many proverbs in this book that really left me contemplating. They are short, honest and inspiring. I can keep listing and listing, I loved this book!
The Praying Mom at Praying Through Chaos I have had this wonderful little book sitting in my living room. It's a book I have opened at random almost everyday just to see what words of wisdom I will find. I have truly enjoyed everything I've read in this book. When it comes to raising my children, getting things done, loving God and my husband, or anything else, I have found gems of wisdom within these pages.
Lauren at 5 Minutes for Books Suzanne Woods Fisher provides a collection of wise Amish sayings that all of us can heed and treasure.
Bailey at Growing For Christ This is such a beautiful book, with it’s hard cover and the breath taking beauty of the Amish countryside and Amish people enjoying life, this is one you won’t want to miss. I like how it’s divided into sections like money and others so you can find just the right Amish proverb for the moment. There are several I’m thinking of printing off and laminating to hang around the house. This book is great whether you respect the Amish and their life, a Christian just looking for a glimpse into a simple life or just to read and relax to.
8/26 Carol at Books Before Food Amish Proverbs is such a sweet little book packed full of wonderful old sayings that are still meaningful today. Reading through each chapter/subject was such a journey of memories for me. Many of the proverbs were familiar to me from my childhood. My mother was a source of never ending sayings that either brought fear or laughs depending on what it was that I was doing. I remember my mom saying that the Pennsylvania Dutch had an odd way of saying things. One of her examples was "throw papa down the stairs a pair of shoes". That always made me laugh. I could understand that sometimes saying things can be mis-understood by others. I can only hope that I learned from that example. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It's a joy to look at and read over and over again.
Danielle at Danielle at The Happy Wife The book did not disappoint me at all. It is a collection of over 200 proverbs and sayings used among the Amish community. Some of them were ones I have heard used by others, some were variations of others I have heard and some were completely new to me. All of them helped to remind me of the simpler life most of wish we led. Each topic also starts with a few paragraphs that tell about the Amish beliefs and history. The book is a very easy read and is great to read when trying to unwind.
8/27 Jennifer at The Steeds If you loved her book Amish Peace, you will love this companion, filled with words of wisdom from the Amish people. Filled with beautiful pictures and nuggets of wisdom of all subjects, you are sure to find something to soothe your soul when you need it.
Jennifer at The Steeds If you loved her book Amish Peace, you will love this companion, filled with words of wisdom from the Amish people. Filled with beautiful pictures and nuggets of wisdom of all subjects, you are sure to find something to soothe your soul when you need it.
Susieqtpies at Scraps of Life This is such an awesome book of wisdom! The pictures are simple and beautiful in the book. This is a book you can read over and over. It would make a great gift for any one at any age.
8/28 Amy at Girlfriends Get Real This book is meant to sit out and be looked at often. I can take so much out of this book. It is full of life lessons.
Anna at Mingle Over Mocha My honest, unbaised opinion? This is one of the best books I own. And I own WAAAYYYY too many books. This book is inspiring, offers wisdom, is calming, is comical, and makes you think. I love it. When I have a couple of moments of rest, I love to pick it up and browse the pages. It is well written, beautifully illustrated, and would make a fabulous gift!
Kaylea at My Scrappy Life On the surface, the book is filled with “pithy” sayings and photography representing the Amish life. On a deeper level, it provides readers not only with an introduction to the Amish faith, but also an introduction to proverbs that come from both the Bible and other cultures. Plus a GREAT interview with the author!
Michelle at My Semblance of Sanity Each section of the book has beautiful photographs of Amish lifestyle and a short poignant story followed by short proverbs from the Amish culture. This is a book you could leave around and pick up when you need a "pick me up." With sections such as Work Ethic, Children and Family, Handling Adveristy and many more, there is no stone unturned...it is a soul's refresher course in living the RIGHT way!
8/30 Stephanie at Stephanie at Coupon Clippin' Mommy I have really enjoyed reading through this book. Suzanne Woods Fisher's Amish Proverbs is a book filled with inspiration for you and anyone who reads it. I have the book on the bookshelf in the family room where I can grab it anytime I have a few minutes. If you are looking for a little something to give as a gift, the hard cover, glossy pages and simple yet stunning pictures make this a great addition to coffee tables and bookshelves everywhere.
Kristina at 3 Under 4 My grandmother grew up Old Order Mennonite and spoke mainly Penn Dutch in her home. I grew up hearing stories about from my grandmother about growing up Mennonite. In Amish Proverbs, Suzanne Woods Fisher emphasizes the importance of family just as it is emphasized in the workings of Amish culture. I must attest to the fact that this is the point of view that I have attributed to the Amish way of life. This book is full of little nuggets of wisdom and I can't but urge you to get your hands on a copy and enjoy it!

Blog tour schedule:
8/10 Julie at The Surrendered Scribe PJ Sugar is back! I love anything Susan May Warren writes but I admit, PJ is one of those characters written so rich and relatable you believe her to be real. You imagine her a pal you'd meet at the coffee shop to catch up on the latest. Susan May Warren weaves powerful truth we can relate to into her quirky characters and fun mysteries. PJ is a character worth rooting for and trust me, there is never a dull moment. I think you could read this book as a stand alone, but I don't encourage it. I want you to experience the full PJ package, I believe you'll agree with me she's worth it. PJ will also show you that you're worth something, too.
Nora at Finding Hope Through Fiction I appreciated the thought process the author takes PJ on to uncover her real feelings, what God wants and what is best for her life. PJ learns how she can listen for the gentle voice of God speaking to her heart. I enjoyed the spiritual thread throughout all three books; it was real and not preachy. I have to say, I enjoyed every minute of reading Licensed for Trouble. Susan Warren gave a very satisfying conclusion to this really fun, tender and likeable PJ Sugar series.
Linda at Mocha with Linda I enjoyed the first two books in the PJ Sugar series (my review of Nothing But Trouble is here), and this one was a delight as well. PJ Sugar makes me smile, and this is a great story for anyone who's wondered if there is such a thing as a fresh start in life.
If you are looking for but haven’t been able to find a good Christian suspense novel then I do recommend the PJ Sugar series by Susan May Warren. With Susan May Warren, her writing keeps the suspense without have a lot of gruesome details, bad language or inappropriate relationships. PJ is much like me she is unsure of herself and feels unlovable – I’ve learned that God does love me and He is the only one who truly counts – PJ hasn’t learned that yet and is still looking for love and acceptance from humans, who will at some time let her down.
8/11 Tina at Tina’s Book Reviews If you haven’t heard of or encountered PJ Sugar…well then you are missing out on a lovable, endearing funny girl who will make you laugh cry and roll your eyes. How would I describe PJ…well think Stephanie Plum goes to charm school and keeps all her wit, humor and charismatic personality. I highly recommend this series and would defiantly start with book one and work your way through, as the books can stand alone they make more sense knowing PJ's story in order.
Wendy at It’s JUST me I can sum this review up in one word - "Excellent!" I LOVED this book! I give it a big "High Five" (stars that is). I thought this was the best one yet. And even though this is the 3rd in the series, you could certainly read this one by itself. I read this in 2 sittings. While being a light mystery, and Christian based, I would also almost say its kinda Chick-Lit-ish, PJ is quirky just like the chick-lit characters. So I would recommend this book to people who like - Mysteries, Christian, and even Chick-Lit. Susan May Warren has written several other books and I am ready to start checking out the other ones! I am hooked!
8/12 Cathy at Word Vessel As much as I loved PJ books one and two, Licensed For Trouble is by far my favorite. Susan May Warren knows how to deliver an entertaining and thought-provoking read, and this latest installment in the PJ Sugar series is a winner in both categories. One minute you'll laugh out loud at PJ's antics and the next you'll be on the edge of your seat wondering what will become of our beloved heroine. Then to wrap it all up in a beautiful package, the author will grip your heart with the spiritual theme of the novel--the truth of who we are in Christ.
Beckie at RBC Library I knew I would like Susan May Warren’s Licensed For Trouble from the first paragraph. Then after a few more pages I knew I loved it! This book is fast-paced, witty, and endearing. A really fun read. Some have written that Warren’s PJ Sugar books are a Christian answer to Jo Evanovitch’s Stephanie Plum. But I say, while there are similarities between the two characters, Warren’s offerings are far superior. PJ’s character has a depth not often found in this genre. The other characters are also well-developed, with a realness to them. As I said in an earlier post you are what you read, so with so little time and so many books, be choosy! Choose PJ Sugar!
Mark at Thoughts of a Sojourner A great read. I really enjoyed this book. This is one of those mystery/suspense novels that aren't too scary/nail biting, but more of a "cozy" suspense novel. I love Warren's characters in this book, and the two that it follows. The book has humor, mystery, suspense, and even romance. By calling it a "cozy" suspense novel, I in no way am trying to say it isn't suspenseful - for it is, it is just a tamer sort of suspense novel. I highly recommend this series to lovers of suspense novels, and also to readers who usually don't get into that type of book - you folks would enjoy this series, I promise.
Casey at Writing for Christ When I enter the world of PJ Sugar, I am no longer within mine, I become a part of the story and see the world through her eyes. I wish I had her spunk and determination! LICENSED FOR TROUBLE is the perfect conclusion to a great series, and I am sorry to see it end. It perfectly sums up PJ’s character and leaves me with the sense that she just might be okay. Deeper issues are unearthed that have smoldered in the background of PJ’s life and within her own struggles, she brings out the best and worst of those around her. I speak of Warren's characters as if they were real, and they are. They have truly danced to life on the screen of my imagination and I wouldn’t be the same without knowing them. I have nothing but good things to say about this entire series!
8/13 Amy at Amys Random Thoughts Once again not disappointed. PJ is such a real character. Another excellent book by Susan. If you love reading about characters who gets whispers from God in various ways, you have to read her books! Another thing is that her endings never end like I expect! I love it!
Annette at Net's Book Notes The suspenseful aspect of the story also rocked in Licensed for Trouble. Kept me turning the pages. As usual, you can’t go wrong with Susie’s books. She is a skilled author who knows how take readers deep into the hearts and minds of imaginary friends—er, I mean characters—and watch them grow.
Ruth at Booktalk & more Susan May Warren’s PJ Sugar series just gets better with each successive installment. PJ’s laugh-out-loud exploits remain as funny and fresh as ever, and the mysteries she stumbles into and solves with her unparalleled sleuthing instincts have gotten better and more suspenseful with each volume. And the romance – wowzers. For my money Warren pens some of the most swoon-worthy romances in the business. She excels at writing the male point-of-view. Each character in this novel is incredibly well-drawn and so realistic it hurts – but that’s just one of the many things I love about Warren’s novels. The worlds she builds and the characters she creates never fail to leave an impact because like PJ, Warren’s writing is real, and her heart for authentic stories of redemption and grace drip from every page of her books.
8/15 Stacey AT WORD Up! The fabulous third installment in Susan May Warren’s witty and thoroughly entertaining PJ Sugar series is an incredibly entertaining and inspiring novel. The best PJ Sugar book to date. The narrative sparkles and the dialogue is witty. This is a beautiful showcase of Susan May Warren’s talent.
Mindy at A Room without Books is Empty PJ's Character rings very real and I found myself empathizing with her and rooting for her from the very beginning. Great Book!!
Lena at A Christian Writer's World Once more Susan May Warren gives us a rip-roaring suspense, filled with enough snippets of comedy to keep it from dragging us down. And when she takes PJ through the journey of understanding her past and learning from it, readers want to examine their own pasts and gain freedom from whatever's weighing them down. I highly recommend this book, and the whole series. I give this book 5 stars.
Jamie at Surviving the Chaos This is a super-fun series without being super fluff. And I think there's a very good chance that each book is better than the one before it.
Molly at Book Reviews by Buuklvr81 Her unique writing style captures the reader instantly and takes them on a whirlwind adventure ride. Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding! I loved the final book in this series just as much as the first two! Though I'll admit it was bittersweet for me, knowing this was the end of a quirky and loving series! I definitely recommend this book, this entire series really, with highest of 5 stars. But be prepared to follow PJ on her troublesome PI instincts and laugh out loud at her, um, well....problematic troubles. PJ Sugar is definitely the quirky, witty and hilarious Stephanie Plum of the Christian fiction world!
8/16 Carol at Carol's Corner This book is full of humor and surprises! This is my favorite book of the P.J. Sugar Series so far!
Leticia at My Daily Trek I LOVED this book. I am totally hooked on the PJ Sugar series. You are immediately drawn to PJ and all the funny shenanigans she gets herself mixed up in. This book had me laughing out loud at times and it had its serious moments as well. There is a lot of action, romance, comedy and even some sad parts all wonderfully and creatively enter twined together that makes such a fantastic read. Susan has such a unique ability of writing that the reader is captivated by the first page. It just gets better and better. And I love how you think may have figured out the mystery and then she hits you with a shocking and surprising twist at the end. You are definitely kept on your toes trying to figure out the puzzles and clues. If you like a good mystery this is definitely a book for your collection.
Sarah at Jane Austen, Chai Tea, & Me Susan May Warren always writes good, solid novels. She’s never failed to make me laugh or cry through her novels. Her PJ Sugar series is my absolute favorite! This is a book you could read as a stand-alone, but you would miss out on a great back story. Pick up this series, you’ll love it!
8/17 Stacie at HobbitDoor I loved this book! I pretty much read it in one day. At one time, that wouldn't have sounded hard. Now I work full time, have two babies under2 and cook mostly from scratch. That doesn't leave a whole lot of time for reading any more. Just ask my husband, I was about worthless for one day. I thought this book was so fun and PJ Sugar is a great character. She's not perfect and everything is not wrapped into a neat little ball. However, I also love the fact that it is not so "real" that there isn't room for a little "fairy tale magic." I went out and reserved the first two at the library right after reading this and am reading them now. Enjoy! I sure did.
Krista at Welcome to Married Life The writing is light and fast paced yet not completely without substance. PJ deals with real world problems and everything isn't all wrapped up with a bow by the end of the story.
Laura at Lighthouse Academy Susan May Warren has crafted another winner. Don’t miss LICENSED FOR TROUBLE or any of Ms. Warren’s books.
Lisa at Musings This series is exceptionally well-written with a terrific blend of laughter with a few tears. PJ's dilemma about which man is best for her spans the length of the series, but Susan May Warren wrapped up that plot line in a believable and satisfying way that left this reader's heart sighing in contentment. The series reminds me of a couple different secular series about females who work to bring down the bad guys. While all the series have provided laughter and goofball moments, the Nothing But Trouble series shows character growth and weaves in a spiritual element that speaks to the reader's heart in a non-preachy way.
This has been a fun series. I have enjoyed following along as P.J. moves back to her hometown and attempts to start over. There are lots of funny moments throughout, but the story also offers insightful thoughts about relationships and learning and growing-- because those dynamics in our life never stop, do they?
I have loved all of Susan May Warren's books and I have especially enjoyed this light fun romantic mystery series featuring amateur PI PJ Sugar. This series stands out because event though the frame of the story may seem familiar (amateur sleuth, coworker of opposite sex that shares attraction), Warren takes it make it her own with a very likable heroine. Personally I felt this to be the best book in the series. Warren is an expert story teller and manages to make each one stand out on its own as well as tie them all in together. Overall, I enjoyed this book and the great way it tied up the series. It's a good light romantic suspense mixed with fun characters and an intriguing storyline. PJ's discovery of who she is has helped to understand her character completely.
Cindy at Cindy's Reviews Another awesome book from Susan M. Warren. Definitely a book that will keep you reading to the end!
Erin at Connected2Christ This book has done nothing but impress me from the beginning to the end! I was captivated once again by the rich story and all the quirky but quite real characters! I was on the edge of my seat throughout and excited to see how it would end. I love how deep and yet light hearted this book could be at times. The PJ Series is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it if you love mysteries and romance along with life changing messages! I can’t wait to see what Susan has planned next.
Monica at 3 Crazy Monkey's I couldn’t put the rest of the series down. “Licensed for Trouble” really did a good job summing up the series!
8/20 Christy at Critty ♥'s Books I must admit. I am bummed this series is over! I have so enjoyed PJ and the other characters of this series it is kind of hard to let go! Susan May Warren as always does a great job with creating characters you love. That you wish you knew in real life. PJ is possibly one of my favorite book characters ever. The last book in the PJ Sugar series is full of mystery and intrigue, romance and confusion, fun and seriousness. It was a perfect ending to the 3 book series and I, who was worried about the ending, was thrilled with the way Susan wrapped up the story! Those of us who have enjoyed the series are not likely to forget Susan’s unforgettable characters anytime soon!
Rel at Relz Reviewz Susan May Warren has saved the best 'til last with the brilliant ending to her PJ Sugar series, Licensed for Trouble. The romantic triangle is executed brilliantly as PJ's dilemma is compounded by the doubts she has of her own self worth and the genuine ties and attraction she feels for both men. With an explosive and satisfying ending, Licensed for Trouble is vintage Susan May Warren and I can't wait for what Susie has in store in 2011.
8/21 Pamela at Daysong Reflections Pamela Licensed for Trouble is a great summer read with just the right mix of romance, mystery, humor, and faith. How I hate to see the PJ Sugar series end! It has been a wild and crazy ride from start to finish. I enjoyed getting to know PJ Sugar in the first book of the series Nothing But Trouble and continued to follow her exploits in Double Trouble. I have to say that Licensed for Trouble has to be the absolute best of the three (in my opinion) but I sure hate to say goodbye.
Andi at Radiant Light Susan May Warren has penned another winner! This book picks up right where the kiss between PJ and her boss Jeremy ended in book two. I absolutely love this series as it is both fun, and suspenseful. Two things that go great together like peanut butter and chocolate! A definite must read!
Vicki at Reading At The Beach This series just keeps getting better and better!! It's got romance, mystery, humor and PJ is still having mishap after mishap. I'd recommend this series to any who wants a light fun read with a female amateur sleuth who you'll love from the beginning.
Lizzie at A Dusty Frame Susan May Warrens writes in a fun easy to read style. Her mysteries always have a nice twist to them. I hate figuring out a mystery before the book is over! I like that Susan includes Christian themes without making them come across preachy or obvious. She shares what PJ learns about herself and God and it fits right into the book.
Marissa at The Review Stew I did not have the pleasure of reading the other books in this series before I read Licensed for Trouble, but it did not make me like this book any less! I am going to be sure and go get them now though! I absolutely love this book. I love that it had a Christian setting but had an air of mystery and romance! I love the storyline, the characters, but I especially love the main character PJ. I could really see myself in her character - the trouble she gets into and how she can't seem to get past her past. I recommend Licensed for Trouble for all you romance, adventure, and sleuth lovers out there! This book will appeal to so many different people!
8/23 Cara at Cara’s Musings You have to love PJ. She's not perfect...and oh does she know it. But she's trying to live a life that gets better each day. She's so aware of her mistakes and she just wants to break free. Even though this is the part of the plot I've focused on, know that the mystery is wonderful. I loved the way that all these different threads wove together into a story I couldn't put down.
8/24 Angela at All Grown Up I absolutely dreaded seeing this book come in the mail... not for what you are thinking either! I LOVE the PJ Sugar series. I don't want it to end! Many have compared Susan May Warren's series to that of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, as a fan of both, I agree! I think the main thing I enjoy about PJ Sugar is that she's real. She makes mistakes, she tries hard to do right in life, doesn't always get it right, but still hangs on to her faith and her love of just being alive. She is such a relatable character, you find yourself thinking, "I could see myself doing that" and agreeing with the thoughts in her head. Susan May Warren has knocked another one out of the ball park as far as I'm concerned, and has left me begging for more!
Andrea at Ponderings by Andrea I love it when a character captures my imagination and heart. That happened to me with apprentice private investigator PJ Sugar in Susan May Warren’s latest, ‘Licensed for Trouble.’
Michelle at Literarily Speaking I was absolutely pleasantly surprised and enchanted with this book. I don't know what I was expecting, but I just adored this book. PJ is one of my favorite characters in a long time. She's fun, smart, and sassy, and she has just enough flaws to make her realistic. This was a nice, clean, quick read that I would recommend to anyone looking for a little fun mixed in with a tad bit of mystery.
8/25 JHS at Colloquium When all of the clues begin to make sense and teh answers to all of the reader's questions are about to be revealed, the pace picks up, leading to a climactic resolution, with some rip-roaringly surprising details revealed. Warren has put her gift to very good use.
MizB at MizB's Book Reviews Susan's writing is always a pleasure to read. Her books are like a cup of comfort to me -- I know I will always find a great story waiting for me inside the covers of her work. This book is no different.
Lori at Some of My Favorite Books Susan is on my list of "must read" authors, so I knew I would be giving this series a try. I have loved her books from the very beginning. Her Noble Legacy series is one of my all-time favorite series. I also thoroughly enjoyed Licensed for Trouble, and am really, really hoping it's not the end of the series.
Lynetta at Open Book As always, Susan’s humor and suspense fuse with timeless truths that remind us God uses imperfect people to accomplish His perfect plan. PJ’s antics will have you smiling long after the book has been closed, but her honest introspection will have you thinking about your own inadequacies and endless value as God’s child.
8/26 Sojourner at Land Of My Sojourn It’s finally here! I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of this third installment in the PJ Sugar series. I dare you to read about PJ’s adventures without chuckling out loud and finding encouragement in reminders of beautiful truths that, like me, you may simply need to hear one more time.
Revka at Revka at The Porch Light This third book is no less entertaining or thought-provoking than the previous two books. PJ remains the funny, danger-prone girl with the penchant for finding mysteries to solve. Mrs. Warren continues to weave in spiritual truths that are profound yet do not seem preachy. Since Mrs. Warren's series typically only include 3 books, PJ Sugar may be history. I hope not because this series is the kind that could stretch out forever and I would never tire of it. If you can't tell, I wholeheartedly recommend the PJ Sugar series and Mrs. Warren.
Amy at Girlfriends Get Real You will love the character of PJ Sugar. This book is filled with suspense, without some of the details that leave your feeling a little queasy. These books keep getting better. You will get hooked in the first chapter and won't want to put it down.
8/27 Edna at My Favorite Things This is a beautiful showcase of Susan May Warren's talent. I'd love to see her write many more PJ Sugar adventures.
Jennifer at Adventures in Unsell Land Highly entertaining and witty, I love Licensed for Trouble! The third book in this series, Licensed for Trouble left me eager to read the first two installments. PJ Sugar is an adorable character. I love her spunk! This was an incredibly fun read that I can't help but highly recommend!
Beth at The Writing Road I've been a fan of author Susan May Warren's PJ Sugar series from the get-go. I'm thrilled to say she didn't disappoint me in book three. It's so satisfying when an author starts a series strong and finishes it so masterfully with both humor and spiritual insights. It's life PJ Sugar style, written with Susie's flair for humor. You hate to finish the book, no matter that you're smiling because PJ's managed to overcome her self-doubts and embrace her future--and find love with the right guy. (But I'm not saying who he is!) When I got to the end, I kept returning to my favorite scenes again and again.
Vera at Luxury Reading Licensed for Trouble is a worthy sequel to Double Trouble and Susan May Warren once again did a great job at combining a somewhat dark mystery with humor, making this book very fun and lighthearted. Licensed for Trouble is technically Christian literature, but the references to religion are so few and far in between that they do not take over the story line. At times, I felt that there were too many loose strings and that there was no way Warren could bring them together in a satisfactory way. However, she did just that and somehow everything tied together and made perfect sense in the end.
Christy at Christy's Book Blog Warren, who has written several series before, is really at her best with PJ. The writing is light-hearted but with incredible depth and PJ tries to find her place in the world. Her family dynamics are fraught with a tension many readers will relate to. PJ is a fantastic heroine, and I always look forward to reading what she's up to. She's completely unpredictable which makes for terrific reading. Warren's series is filled with heart, danger, and faith: a potent mix.
8/28 Patty AT Broken Teepee Oh this was a fun book! Licensed for Trouble is a great beach read full of fun and well developed characters.
Amydeanne at The 160 Acrewoods This book in particular out of the series has got to be my favorite. I love the thread of “new life” that comes through this book with the characters. I was actually surprised by it, but in a good way. I love that Susan tied her own voice of adoption (she was adopted) into PJ’s character — which is probably why it moved me as much as it did. Watching people in my own life struggle with their history and life (who they are) just makes me realize how much God has given us through his adoption of us as His children. I was so happy to see this in this book! Because throughout all of PJ’s life struggles realizing that she was truly loved was a big thing that some of us miss. This book is fast! It’s furious! It’s hilarious! and it’s lovable! Anyone looking for a great read, check it out! And if you haven’t read the whole series I totally suggest it. One of my favorite romantic/sleuthing/chick lit read series.
Kaylea at My Scrappy Life I give this novel & this series at least a 4.5 out of 5. The characters are great, the writing superb and as always, Warren has left me wanting more. I can understand why she has "ended" the series with three books, but I truly think PJ's exploits and adventures as a private investigator - and well, her romance with {spoiler} could fill many many pages. (Can you imagine the trouble PJ could get into planning a wedding - all while running after bail jumpers.......)
Okay y'all, I just love me some PJ Sugar!!! I couldn't wait for this book to come out--and you know what? It has me wanting MORE! PJ finds herself in a ton of unlikely circumstances all at once and she doesn't give in without a fight. Susan May Warren's writing talent is evident in her latest PJ Sugar novel. Every page has a different twist that hinders the reader from putting the book down until the last page is read! Great job, Susan! Shameless plug here: please give us more PJ!!

"The thing that blows me away about Harmony's story is that she showed back up. How easy would it be to never step foot in a strip club ever again. The pain, the memories, the past was all right there but she decided that this was not about her but the hundreds of women that remained in the clubs."
Craig Gross, Founder of XXX Church

6/14 Jami at Intentionally Living... What I love about this book is that it is told first hand from some one who was trapped in the sex industry and who escaped to help others. She has a deep desire to bring other young women out of that world and to know Christ.
Tina at Tina's Book Reviews Harmony's story is hard, she at 13 probably experienced more than most do in a lifetime. Tormented by feelings of worthlessness and loneliness, Harmony grasps onto anyone who will show her the least amount of attention. For a woman whose entire life was wrapped in sexual perversion, it was amazing to see her turn all of it around and inspire herself to help other girls and women in the industry. Harmony's story is one of great pain but great triumph, you can't help but be lifted up by her bravery and her amazing work of outreach.
Monica at My 3 Crazy Monkey's I am enjoying this book. The writing is good. I would absolutely recommend this book. For some reason I love reading books about overcoming hardships and learning from them.
Michelle at My Semblance of Sanity Litfuse Publicity group once again sent me a PHENOMENAL and INSPIRING book to review! I love when they do that!! Harmony Dust's raw account of her life and the struggles that began while she was still in her teens and drove her to make some life-changing decisions will chill you to the bone. But her resilience once she turned her life to Christ will warm your heart like no other book you have read. Go out and by SCARS AND STILETTOS for every woman you know. Let them know THEY ARE WORTH it.... THEY ARE WORTH HIM!
Beckie at RBC Library One of the strengths of Scars and Stilettos is its honesty. Harmony doesn’t make excuses for the choices she made. Yes, she details the abuse she suffered, but never uses that as a justification for her actions. She takes full responsibility for her life as a stripper and she gives all the credit to God for the power to change. This book will make you reexamine your views of just who God loves and wants to make His children. The Jesus that ate with publicans and prostitutes is the Jesus portrayed in this book.
Maggie at Tethered Mommy I would recommend this book for anybody who is interested in “normal” biographies. Harmony Dust is not a celebrity but she is a normal girl who was lured into the stripping business because of the money. I also think that Christians and non-Christians alike can admire her faith in God, her unwavering belief that God would help her and aid her in her mission to reach out to other dancers
Lisa @ Heritage Homestead and Homeschool Academy Like Harmony, I felt worthless and broken. I, too, turned to exotic dancing to support myself when I was in college. I was disgusted by my lifestyle, but I felt trapped. But, I got out twelve years ago and never looked back. And, like Harmony, I found life, freedom, forgiveness, and complete restoration in my Lord, Jesus Christ. I think almost every page of my copy of Scars and Stilettos is stained with my tears. This is an honest, raw, open telling of what life is like for those who have been abused, assaulted, and who work in the s*x industry. It is different from lots of true stories that I've read, in that Harmony Dust tells her story just like she's sitting across from you, sharing a cup of coffee.
Chistine at The IE Mommy Many times memoirs are either very intense with almost too much information or the complete opposite and downright boring. Harmony carefully blends the details of her past so that you have a vivid image in your mind but does not offer so much that is too hard to comprehend.
Valerie at Teatime with Valerie I love this book. The graphic details are hard to handle, but Harmony's life was tough. I couldn't put down the book. It is a tough read, an emotional read. I had tears in my eyes as I read about the life she led, the decisions she felt forced to take, and how worthless she felt. It was amazing to see how she has persevered and the impact she is making on other lives. You'll want to give a copy of this book to every woman who has faced abuse and neglect, or who needs to know that she is a treasure in God's eyes.
Michelle at Edgy Inspirational Author I enjoyed this story/memoir and read it straight through. I found it compelling and well written. In fact, I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't a novel because it read like one. The author gives the reader a real feel for the lifestyle and how a young woman can get pulled into it without making the reader feel icky. Not an easy task with this type of subject matter. I appreciate how she showed that God had used the damage from her past to heal her in the present, and to prepare her for the future so she could minister to others.
6/16 Elizabeth at Count It All joy If reading about a woman who has overcome huge odds and now wants to share the love of Christ with others, then be sure to get a copy of this book.
Stephanie at The Joy Centered Life I literally could not put this book down. I read it in one setting and lost a lot of sleep that night because of it, but it was so worth it. Through her personal story, Harmony Dust, shows the struggles and hopelessness of children (and adults) who grow up in poverty, neglectful homes, sexually saturated childhood and a structure of abusive relationships. It hurt my heart as she told the story of wanting something different nearly her whole life: yearning to have someone tell her she was loved and mean it, as a child needing the basic security of a safe home and food. But the thing that stood out to me a lot was that the way she found herself looking for Jesus, was through a stranger at a ballet class that became her friend and drew her towards Christ's loving arms. Can we all be like that please!? My brother in law recently said, "To think that as God is drawing sinners to Himself through perfect love, I will drive them away with my judgmental heart." That's most of us. Before I read this book I definitely would not have been as compassionate towards an exotic dancer, but now I want to be like her ballet friend that saw her as God saw her, a treasure.
Marta at Marta's Meanderings This was such an inspiring book. Reading about the life that Harmony lived and then seeing the what she transformed her life into, is an amazingly honest, poignant, beautiful story of redemption and transformation. This is a book that should be read by every woman, regardless of their circumstances. It gives everyone hope that they can overcome what they've been through.
Celtic Lady Blog O'The Irish I guess all I can say is wow. I found this book to be quite interesting as I had never really read or thought to read about strippers. A straightforward and honest memoir...
Shonda at Knowlton Nest This book really opened my eyes to the way a young woman could easily fall into the trap of being so desperate for love or money and become involved in this industry that degrades women. I was completely drawn into Harmony's story and could not put this book down. My heart ached for this young woman as so much of her life was "stripped" of innocence, yet she was given a second chance to turn away from the hurt of this world and share God's love with the same girls she used to be like. I believe every woman needs to read this book because whether abused or not, we are all God's Treasures.
6/18 Lulu at Knits and Reads This is a brutally honest, and heart wrenching story that will bring you to tears, laughter and help you see that there is hope in all situations. I enjoyed this book, it was an eye-opener to realize how terribly awful it is for some people, how some people are able to turn things around and come out ahead, maybe better than the rest of us. If I were put in Harmony's shoes, I'm not so sure that my outcome would have been the same, we all have an inner strength, but how strong is it? How deep is it, and how far will we go to realize it?
Stacy at A Novel Source There are so many villains in this book, but it is not written as a "blaming" book against all men or even against those who violated Harmony. Scars and Stilettos reads like a fast-paced novel with a kindness and love towards women who have found themselves in the sex industry. One never considers to blame and judgment is never even considered. So many in this world blame the victim or the woman rather than recognizing all of the facts and participants in the sex industry. Her story resounds in so many of the strip clubs and the message of hope she brings forth with this book and with the non-profit she founded is truly miraculous.
6/19 Paula at Grace Reign Harmony's story is riveting. I felt angry at the many people who mistreated her, at a system who took advantage of her needs. But I also saw her heart, her longing to love and be loved, and how beautifully the LORD our God offered His grace and called her out of pain. And as I saw her heart, I believe she showed me the hearts of many who, like her, long to be free.
Andi at Radiant Light This is one of the most painful and beautiful books you could ever read. Within it's pages is the story of Harmony and her story of how God found her in one of the most horrible places on the Las Vegas strip as a exotic dancer and turned her life around. Once again we see how our Lord and Savior takes something ugly and disgusting and makes it beautiful. This story of Harmony is one of the best I have read this year and I will never forget it. I highly recommend it.
Marissa at The Review Stew Her book was inspiring and it captivated me! I did not want to put it down and I am definitely going to pass on this book/recommend this book to others who need inspiration in their life and/or need a reminder that God promises to never give us more than we can handle in our lives and that he is always watching over us and has a very special plan for our lives!
Jettie at Jettie's Ramblings I can see how her childhood and early teen years could cause her to question her worth. It is a sad truth that many young women get pulled into a lifestyle such as this because of sexual abuse. This book is not light reading, but it does have a sound message.
Kristina at 3 under 4 Scars and Stilettos was a poignant look at the life of one sex trade slave. It was well written and fast-paced. Harmony tells her story truthfully and you can sense her heart for these women seeping through the pages.
Karen at Sky-High View Harmony relays her story with passion and compassion--passion for the Lord Who gave her a chance and a reason to change, and compassion for any women who believe they're not worthy of love and respect, especially those locked into the stripper's lonely life. Who should read this book? Anyone who's given up hope--of changing, of being accepted, of finding a reason to go on. And anyone who knows people who need hope.
Crystal at The Scattered Mind Fragments of a Musical Mommy I cried tears of joy. This Christian tale of transformation is perfect for anyone who feels an emptiness in their life. This tale is perfect for anyone who is on the cusp of their own great transformation and is looking for strength.
6/22 Mountaineer Country This book, is not a memoir of a Harmony’s life as a stripper. Rather, it is a memoir of Harmony’s life of darkness and her climb to salvation. It is very much a good versus evil book and extremely uplifting. This was a gripping and emotionally intense story. It is a faced-paced memoir that reads like a novel. Even though this is not the type of book that I would typically choose to read, I found myself not wanting to put the book down. In fact, when it was down, my mind would wander and reflect back on Harmony and her life. I was touched.
Zoe at Zoe Reads Truthfully this book was hard to get through. Not because she was a bad writer. Far from the truth. She's brutally honest not just in the telling of the circumstances but of her emotional landscape and the actions of those around her. As a reader, you're in that room with her. The book was heart-breaking because you just want to take her in your arms and lead her down a different path. Which, according to Harmony finding God, did for her. Thank Goodness.
Tracy at Pix-N-Pens Thank you, Harmony, for sharing your story. Your courage and transparency are inspiring. May God bless your ministry in a mighty way. I recommend it to anyone who wishes to work with young women in ministry, or for anyone who has loved ones involved in the sex-trade industry.
Ponderings by Andrea Based on the trials that she has gone through – as well as poor choices she’s made – she could be an angry and bitter young woman these days. Instead, He has rescued her, and she is ministering to the very people who are living the life in which she was ensnared and entrapped. I was so encouraged by her testimony! I can understand why anyone would want to get out of that lifestyle and never look back; it is amazing that she continues to return to that environment to minister to other women who are still ensnared. She has an amazing heart for the Lord and for people! I am so glad she is living a happy and healthy life now. To God be the glory! I thank Harmony for sharing her story. I am sure it will be a blessing to many!
Emmanuel at The Christian Watchman This is a fascinating live account and honest read which you won't want to put down right through to the end. I would recommend this book not just for anyone struggling with similar issues but to all parents with girls!
6/23 Missie at Thirsty I spent the weekend in Vegas last weekend. As you walk down the streets there are advertisements for girls for hire. People stand out on the street and try to force cards with half naked women on them, saying to “call for a good time.” It is easy to just look the other way, to head onto our destination, ignoring all the advertisements. But, after reading this book I couldn’t help but want to scream from the rooftops about how awful the life of a stripper is. How these girls are gifts from God, treasures. They are more than sex symbols that guys should sit and watch and throw money at. They have mothers, families and sometimes children. They are people, they are souls, and they are much more than bodies.
JHS at Colloquium What makes Harmony's story fascinating is how she came to recognize the situations and people in her life who were detracting from, rather than enhancing her well-being, and developed the inner strength to walk away from those destructive circumstances. She became a self-actualized, well-educated, and successful woman who is now telling her story with the hope that it will inspire others. Refreshingly absent from Scars and Stilettos are the unconvincingly effusive, overwrought professions of belief and overt attempts to convert the reader to teh author's belief system that frequently punctuate autobiographies of this sort. Because of her wisely restrained writing style, the faith that Harmony believes empowers her to do all things through Him who gives her strength takes center stage and enables Harmony to acheive her goal: Scars and Stilettos is indeed inspiring and uplifting.
Carol at Books Before Food Scars and Stilettos is a gripping story that will hold your interest through until the very end. It's nicely written and I recommend it to anyone who is in this line of work and wants to get out or to anyone who just wants to understand how or why women get into this type of work.
Lynetta at Open Book Reading this book opened my eyes to a whole new way of viewing "those" sorts of people, the people who need my concern and compassion the most. This content is some of the most important material Christians who are concerned about the culture will read this year.
Revka at The Porch Light Although difficult for me to read at times, I am glad I did read Scars and Stilettos. It gave me a chance to look behind the facade of sex and glamour to see the hurts that propelled Harmony down such a destructive road. Her story has widened my horizons and given me a greater compassion for girls who are still in her position.
Esther is Blogging Includes author interview I read this book in one sitting and enjoyed it. Heart wrenching at the beginning, it takes you through a life journey. The journey is somewhat similar to my own personal experience and I believe there are many women out there that face the same. Abusive relationships, thinking you're not good enough. Well, this is definately the book that can give you hope and you will know that you are treasured. He treasures you, He loves you. A true story that gives you hope. I would suggest all women read it and mum's, get them for your daughters. Without sounding preachy, the book leads you to the only hope that mankind has. A great testimony.
6/24 Jen at The Steeds This was a hard book to read, but I’m glad I did! I think all women should read it so they can help others who might be in this same situation or could help stop young girls from escalating into this type of situation. It truly affects us all!
Tracy at Tracy's Book Review If you want to see a first hand story of how a person pooled up her courage and escaped from a life that many could not ever imagine even being a part of. She is an example to all of the other people out there who are in the same circumstances that she was in- there is a way out, there are people out there willing to help.
Michelle at Edgy Inspirational Fiction I enjoyed this story/memoir and read it straight through. I have nothing but good things to say about this book.
6/25 Mattie at Nothing But Love The book was very well written and honest. As I was reading, I found it hard to put the book down. Harmony is inspiring and I am in awe of the courage it took for her not only to stop stripping, but to turn to God, admit her faults, accept His grace and go a step further and share her story so that others would feel the same hope and love that she feels. AMAZING!
Dona at Allergy Kid Mom I recommend this book for everyone to read, especially those who are going through problems and feel as though there is no hope for them.
Stacy at Up On Eagles Wings I read it cover to cover in one day. I spent the first half of the book alternating between wanting to give the author a hug, or grab her by the shoulders and shake her. This book is one of the better books that I've read all year. It definitely stands on its own.
This book is a truly moving testimony poured out from a honest heart. I picked this story up in the morning hours and could not put it down! This book is inspirational and moving story, that shows God’s loving grace and the fact that no matter how far you go, there’s always forgiveness in brokenness. I encourage everyone to pick up this story full of hope, love, and purpose. I applaud the author in being honest and letting us know what it's really like out there and what she went through.
Kristen Anderson thought she had the picture perfect life until strokes of gray dimmed her outlook on life. Once a happy child, Kristen’s world darkened after three friends and her grandmother died within two years. Still reeling from these losses, she was raped by a friend she thought she could trust. She soon spiraled into a depression that didn't seem to have a bottom.
One January night, the seventeen-year-old made a decision: She no longer wanted to deal with the emotional pain that smothered her. She lay down on a set of cold railroad tracks and waited—for a freight train to send her to heaven…and peace.
Amazingly, Kristen survived her suicide attempt… but the 33 freight cars that ran over her severed her legs. Now she not only had to deal with depression; she also had to face the physical pain and life without legs.
But Kristen's story didn't end there. After her darkest days Kristen discovered a real purpose for living. Now, in her compelling book Life, In Spite of Me, Kristen shares her journey from despair to hope.
ncludes letters from Kristen that share messages she wishes someone would have told her—when she was depressed and struggling with loss, shame from sexual abuse, and suicidal thoughts. Watch the video trailer here!

5/17 Martha at Our Family's Adventures This book was one of those incredible books that you get in the mail and sit down and start reading, and you do not stop until you are done. Her story is one that you will immediately think of several people you wish would read it as those feelings of hopelessness you know has encompassed many a teen or adult. This book deals with a tough topic of suicide, but really brings out the fact that God saved her life to do work for Him. Her choices had hard consequences that she paid for, but she uses the reminder of her choices to glorify Him. i think we can find ourselves in her story so much as she had a good family, great parents, but life was awful with losing ones she loved, being raped and she did not think she could go on. This story shows how God can in spite of ourselves bring us to Him and make beauty from Ashes. This is an incredible book and one that I think is worth owning and passing on to friends and family. An A+
Linda at Mocha with Linda Life, In Spite of Me is a beautiful story of a life redeemed from the pit. If you parent or minister to young people, you will want to read this book.
5/18 Tabitha at Through My Eyes Every now and then a book harnesses the power of words in a way that makes you believe language was invented for the sheer purpose of this story. Some words reach out past the confines of pages and print that hold other words back. Some words open the palms of their hands to release a fragile winged thing we know as hope. Some words reveal the scars on the way to healing and show that there is beauty in brokenness and value and purpose in life, especially when we least see it. This book is such a book.
Amy at Girlfriends Get Real I have been burdened so much lately about raising my children in a house that serves the Lord. A house that goes to God for wisdom and guidance. I want my girls to understand how much God loves them while they are young. I want their relationship with him to be so much more than church on Sunday mornings.
Jennifer @ Adventures in Unsell Land This is an amazing story that will give you insight into depression, suicide, and the hope that can be found in God alone. As you walk through Kristens story your heart will hurt and your eyes will burn with tears but your soul will find joy in her story as well. The words of this book are very intimate, as if you were sitting on Kristens couch listening to her story first hand. Kristen's story shows that even though we tend to think we are in control of our lives, HE is the one that ultimately is. God is exalted as you watch Him walk Kristen through the pain and difficult days of recovery and as you watch Kristen come to an understanding that God didn't just want her to be a baptized, church going person but that He desired to be part of her daily life and that it was only through that personal relationship that Kristens life could be lived in the fullest manner. As a result Kristen can say today that the loss of her legs was a very small price to pay for her completeness in Christ Jesus.
I was moved by how the book beautifully portrayed the illusion of how things appear one way on the outside but can actually be entirely different on the inside. I was also reminded that ultimately our children desperately desire to please us and we need to keep that in mind even when we are certain that is not the case. Don’t miss Life in Spite of Me by Kristen Jane Andersen and Tricia Goyer whether suicide is a part of your reality, you need direction and hope or you are looking for an excellent read.
Tasra at Teen Identity Magazine Incredibly well written, Kristen Jane Anderson and Tricia Goyer did well by focusing on the mess of emotions and spirit, while still providing a descriptive account of the physical realities. Anyone who reads this will be able to relate in some way, somewhere throughout the book. The account comes off with an honesty and peace that at times can be lacking in autobiographies that deal with such traumatic events.
Chelle at From His Heart to Mine Life, In Spite of Me, is not an emotionally easy book to read, for moms, for those walking through, around, beside, or in depression, for anyone who cares for other human beings. But, it is written honestly, with light given to the decisions Kristen made and those forced upon her. Life, In Spite of Me, is a book proving God is a jealous God (Deuteronomy 4:24), a God who cares for us (1 Peter 5:7), and that He does know the plans He has for us (Jeremiah 29:11). For anyone who has despaired, for any of you who know someone prone to depression, you need this book. You will find hope and the redeeming, saving power of the mighty, loving God.
Michelle @ My Semblance of Sanity This story is captivating as Kristen discovers to real purpose for living. As you see her travel from despair to victory your heart will be touched by her letters to her young readers. Kristen speaks the words she wishes she had heard that may have kept her off the tracks that night.
Trish at Trish Berg Blog I have known Tricia Goyer as a fellow author for a few years, and have been utterly blessed and encouragd by each of her books.
5/20 Dena at Mother Inferior An unbelievable but true story of despair, attempted suicide, pain, hope--and God's amazing grace. I can't recommend it highly enough, especially if you've ever been depressed or know someone who struggles with this very real and debilitating illness.
Molly at Book Reviews by Buuklvr81 I'm truly happy I had the chance to review this emotionally gripping story of a brave young woman. It really puts life into perspective. This brave young woman went through so much struggle and pain. Reading her story and seeing letters at the end of chapters from her, really tugged at my heart. I highly suggest that everyone read this blessed. emotional and moving story of Kristin's life, especially those who are feeling down about themselves for whatever reason or just going through hard times in their life. This 5 star (although if I had my way it would be so many more!) book will show you that life is precious no matter what, and not to be taken for granted. Well done on this eye opener of a book!!!
Alaina Frederick at Life as Felt Through My Heart Kristen’s story is one that I could not put down. From cover to cover I read while my heart filled with emotions and my head with memories. Tears ran down my face – at times sad and other’s happy. Tears of joy – for “it’s okay to have happy tears.” I want to personally thank Kristen for finding strength in our Lord to not just share this journey with her friends and family but the world. From her friend’s death to her rape and then to the ultimate turn of fate – her attempted suicide. It has forever changed her – and now because of her I am renewed.
Laura at The Calico Critic From the opening pages, I was riveted to her story and how God is working in her life. Her co-writer, Tricia Goyer was an excellent partner as Kristen shared her struggles. On more than one occasion, I was brought to tears as I related to some of the emotional pain she was dealing with. I was also moved in how the Lord has touched her body, mind and spirit. If you’re dealing with depression, I highly recommend this book. If you know someone who’s struggling, I recommend that you get them a copy. Kristen’s story is amazing, and it has much hope for those looking for even a glimmer of light at the end of their very long, very dark tunnel.
5/22 Elizabeth at Count It All Joy I’ll be honest – what led me to review this book was the fact that I love Tricia Goyer as an author. But what kept me reading was the story itself. The voice of this book is different than most - Kristen talks almost in a monotone and I believe that's part of what makes this book so impactful. By talking in this voice she's able to convey her fears and almost detachment. The premise of the book makes it difficult to say that I loved it and can't wait for you to read it. Honestly though, I haven't stopped thinking about this book even after I finished reading it.
Jennifer at Rundpinne Life In Spite of Me is an extraordinary book about an amazing teenager who faced what many of us thankfully never shall, who overcame the obstacles and who grew to become a better person through her struggles and now reaches out to help others. I highly recommend Life In Spite of Me to all readers.
Mandy at The Trenches of Motherhood I read this book in two hours and hungrily turned each page as I cried in awe of God's amazing grace. Kristen wrote honestly with tenderness that not only shares her story, but touches you in whatever place you are in right now. I greatly appreciated the openness and the vulnerability with which Kristen shared her story.
5/24 Nancy at Bookfoolery and Babble Life in Spite of Me is a very quick read and it's written in simple language. In a lot of "recovery from disaster" books, you end up reading about the medical aspect in great detail. That's not the focus in this particular book. Instead, the author zones in on emotion and healing, faith and hope. I'm so accustomed to reading gory details of disaster recovery that I found the lack of medical detail a little surprising, but actually it was rather nice not to slog through the whole medical end of the recovery. The author's objective is straightforward: she doesn't want anyone to go through what she's experienced and she feels compelled to share her story about how her faith has made her life better than it was before.A fascinating, awful, eventually-uplifting story of how one young lady turned her personal tragedy into something positive.
Stephanie at Coupon Clippin' Mommy Life, In Spite of Me provides inspiration for anyone who has thought even for a moment that there life wasn't worth living. It's for anyone who wants to learn from experience and gain insight on how to reach out to those in their life who are struggling. While reading Life, In Spite of Me I found myself sorting through a gamet of emotions. The most powerful emotion I felt was one of love.
Flamingo Mama I think what I enjoy most about Kristen’s story is how God used a tragedy for something incredible. Kristen is now ministering to countless young people. Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that would become her life’s calling.
5/25 Tina at Mad Hatter Mom In her book Kristen talks about her miraculous survival that night and the aftermath she faced and the hope that replaced despair. Kristen’s story is one filled with not just hope, but courage and grace. It reminds us all that there is truly only one person in charge and through Him we will either be delivered into, from, or through the fire. No matter which it is, He will be there.er story doesn’t end, it just begins. This book touched me in such an amazing way.
Mel at Real Heart Prints If there’s ever a book that has kept my attention and touched my heart like this one, I can’t say for sure. It’s the story of a young girl’s attempt at suicide….a true story of the hope that God can give. This book is different from most in that Kristen really gets down to the raw emotions and feelings that she had. She holds no details back, as she seeks to tell her story in such a way as to encourage and uplift others who might be going through similar emotions. She’s so real throughout the book, and her ability to just keep it all so real is what touched my heart. She shared what God had laid on her heart to share.
Kaylea at Kaytebug2002 Simple, honest and quite straight forward, the memoir crafted by Anderson and Goyer will stick with you, long after you finish reading it.
Prerna@The Mom Writes Every once in a while, I get to read a book that inspires me from the very start. Life, In Spite of Me by Kristen Jane Anderson and Tricia Goyer is one such amazing book. The book describes in vivid detail the emotional turmoil and psychological confusion of a teenager, what drives her to contemplate suicide, and how by dint of prayer, courage and an unwavering faith she recovers and experiences the peace she always wanted.
5/26 Freda at Freda's Voice Kristen's story, right from the very beginning, caught me and pulled me tight to it. I couldn't put the book down. I knew she survived, but while reading, you forget that and just want to see her through. Your heart breaks at times, but in a way that makes you appreciate what you have. I really didn't think a story, though real, could resonate through me like it does. This is one of those books, you tell all your friends about. Definitely on my recommendation list!
Lyndsay at Scripted Heart Through this book you will walk a raw journey of battling depression, rape, loss, loneliness, doubt, pain, love, hope, forgiveness, devotion, and Amazing Grace. You will also read letters from Kristen that share messages she wishes someone would have to her while she was struggling with thoughts, feelings, etc. This book is a must read for everyone! One to be passed on to friends and family who battle with depression or suicidal thoughts, or even to people who know fellow friends or family who battle with these events in their lives. It is a must read for every teenager as well. God was not finished with her that night and what he has done in her life... her heart... is only something he himself can do. It's glorious, and one that can be experienced by everyone who comes to a passionate relationship with him as well. There is hope and truth ringing from these pages. Survival and life. There is a faith in Kristin that I myself wish I had in Christ. It is outstanding and beautifully written. It draws you in from the first sentence and captures your heart every word along the way.
Rel at Relz Reviewz This powerful story of Kristen's attempt to take her life, the harrowing journey through unimaginable pain and fear after losing her legs and her rediscovery of faith, hope and purpose, is a gift to those who read it. Although co-written, it is very much Kristen's voice, sharing both her heartache and new found joy. Life, In Spite of Me is truely inspirational and a testament to Kristen's determination and the faithfulness of God.
Heather @ faith, family and fun When I did begin, the first chapter was riveting, but painful. But, after the initial sadness and loss, I found that I should have realized from the smile on Kristin’s face on the cover that this book would be filled with hope. While the subject matter was complex and upsetting at parts, the writing is very tender and honest. Kristin’s story is more of a love story with her creator and her life than I ever imagined it could be. Kristin is not just a survivor, but a wonderful light to those who are hurting and to those who wish to help.
Pat at Why Didnt You Warn Me In her compelling book Life, In Spite of Me, Kristen shares her journey from despair to hope. If you work with youth or women dealing with depression, this might be a good book to share.
Vera at Luxury Reading Life, In Spite of Me is a cautionary tale, but also one that many might find inspiration in. Kristen survived against all odds and her experiences just may be what someone needs to address their issues instead of considering suicide as a solution.
Elisabeth at Babbette's Book Blog Kristen’s journey is not easy, and she doesn’t sugar-coat her wrestling. Even after she recognizes God’s hand in saving her life, she struggles enormously. From coming to terms with the fact that she did attempt suicide to battling her reliance on antidepressants, the reader gets that losing her legs may have just been the easy part. Kristen even describes her fear of being cast into the limelight to share her story. In the end, she’s found her way, at a day-to-day pace, relying her on her relationship with God. Life in Spite of Me is a book that is destined to be passed around from friend to friend, and it is well worth the recommended read.
5/28 Gwen at Chew & Digest Kristen Jane Anderson is a remarkable woman. What she has done with her life and her faith since attempting suicide and losing her legs is a roadmap in how to turn your life around when you hit bottom. Those with a strong faith will no doubt love this book. I too, admire her and her strength amazes me.
Finding Hope Through Fiction I couldn’t stop reading this book from the very first page. It’s written in first person, so I felt as if I were sitting down with Kristen as she told me her story. She came to learn that God works all things out in life for His glory and our good. Even things meant to destroy us. He uses it all. This is an inspiring courageous story you’ll never forget. It will touch your heart, give you hope, encouragement and remind you life is a gift to be cherished.
Michelle at Edgy Inspirational Author blog Life, in Spite of Me is a memoir-type book which I found very inspiring and insightful. I got a bit choked up several times, especially at the scene that described Kristen's baptism, because of how much her newly-changed life positively affected her family. This book was well-written and courageous. I loved the parts that read like a novel, such as when she remembered the past events leading up to the night she laid on the tracks. I also loved how detailed the story was regarding the aftermath and healing that took place once her legs were gone. Sometimes people don't realize how good things are until they no longer have them...like being able to walk. Life looks completely different from a wheelchair. This book showed that very well.
Stefany at ToBeThode It was such a well-written and thought-provoking story. Kristen talks openly about what her life was like prior to her suicide attempt and after. She talks about her love of her family, friends, but most importantly God. She describes her journey to finding God in her life. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a good read, but most importantly to anyone struggling with their own depression. Whether or not you have tried to commit suicide, Kristen’s story will give you hope for the future…
Leticia at My Daily Trek I wasn't expecting the in-depth detail and honesty of Kristen's testimony. She is so open and honest about the moment she attempted suicide and her recovery process. Her emotional and physical pain are almost tangible to the reader. She shares her struggles in dealing with four devastating losses, a rape and trying to cope with the overwhelming depression before and after her attempt. She is such a strong and courageous young woman. Her faith in God is inspiring to me. She had a long and hard recovery but never blamed God, but leaned on Him heavily and He never failed her. He stuck by her side through it all. I also loved how Kristen reaches out to her readers in her personal notes. Her message is so clear. You are NOT alone. If you let Him, God will be your permanent partner. This is a very powerful and profound testimony of strength, courage and faith.
Kristin at Simply Stacie Life In Spite of Me is utterly amazing. The story it conveys — effortlessly, honestly, poignantly — is an unbelievable one. When I pulled this book off my shelf, I thought to myself, “Wow, this is one exuberant woman.” Then I noticed that she had no legs and really thought, “Wow.” Not only will you not be disappointed with this book, you will feel better after reading it — better about yourself, others, life in general. Do yourself (or someone you care about) a favor and read this book. Its message is far too valuable to be passed by.
6/1 Revka at Our Family Porch I'll be very open and tell you that Life, In Spite of Me came at a good time for me. I was more than a little overwhelmed, was exhausted, and was feeling very unappreciated. It's at times like those when my thoughts tend to turn dark. I couldn't put the book down. It simply overwhelmed me because I could identify with so much of Kristen's story. The loneliness and sense of isolation, the feelings of futility and inevitable defeat, the crushing weight of overwhelm - I've experienced them all. As I read, I felt hope once again as Kristen's story, although it started out sadly, was ultimately joyously triumphant. Several of the letters Kristen wrote spoke directly to me. One particular one broke my reserve enough for my eyes to tear up, even though others were present in the room with me. If I'd been alone, I would have been sobbing.
Andi @ Radiant Light This is one of those WOW books that really change your perspectives on depression and bi-polar disorder. It is very real and raw. I applaud Kristen for her bravery in telling her story, not many young women would. I know that God is going to do great things with her story to help others who deal with these issues. God is the ultimate physician and partnered with Kristen's story the healing can be limitless. I highly recommend this book! I think this would be a great addition to any library with teens.
Deena at A Peek at My Bookshelf Instead of losing her life, Kristen lost both of her legs in that incident. She shares about her grueling recovery, and her struggle to surface from the depths of discouragement and depression, to determine the cause behind it, and to rise above it all in God's power. Amid the chapters of Kristen's story are love letters from Kristen, pointed sharing at pivotal moments in the story that reach out from the pages into the hearts of the readers.
6/2 Marla at Marla Taviano I’ll tell you what. This book was hard to read. But I’m glad I read it. Yet, God has a plan. What Kristen intended for death, God used (and is using) to bring her more life than she ever had before. Unbelievable. But true.
